Justices of the Peace and retired Justices of the
Peace are authorized to perform marriages in Texas.
Each Texas county has at least one justice of the
peace, and generally there is one for each precinct in
the county. JPs preside over the justice court (called
the "people's court"), which has jurisdiction over
civil, small claims, and eviction suits up to $10,000.
As a magistrate, a JP can issue arrest warrants,
search warrants, and review applications for emergency
mental commitments and emergency protective orders.
