They have a complementary relationship with JPs, as both engage with couples at different stages of the marriage’s legal process. Massachusetts – End Child Marriage

On July 28, 2022, Governor Baker signed the state budget that included a clause banning child marriage! Shockingly, until July 2022, there was no minimum age to marry in the state of Massachusetts. The Justice of the Peace Association worked actively to change the law. With our partners we made 18 the minimum age to marry in the Commonwealth. Included in the mix is the processing of legal marriages. In Massachusetts, there has been a lack of direction or guidance – for JPs, clerks and couples. Many marriages have already been planned and need to be postponed. Other times, marriages are essential (health benefits, immigration issues, emotional duress), and need to proceed.
