Bridgeport grapples with city hall marriage glut, unregulated justices of the peace By Brian Lockhart, Staff Writer BRIDGEPORT  —  Councilman Jorge Cruz has a simple solution to the issue of justices of the peace conducting business in the Margaret Morton Government Center on Broad Street. “Don’t do marriages at city hall. Come up with another place,” Cruz said. Mayor Joe Ganim’s administration has begun grappling with problems involving weddings at the government center, where couples go to obtain a marriage license from the vital records office off of the first-floor lobby. Ganim’s new chief administrative officer, Thomas Gaudett, on Monday issued […]

JP Appointments

It is frustrating that the same political maneuvering that led to our research on Connecticut’s appointment process is what ultimately killed the bill to raise the qualifications of marriage officiants in Connecticut. Nonetheless, we’re making progress. We had tons of participation on our Zoom Q&A presentation in March. Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas was persuaded by our white paper, and she proposed the initial legislation to create a working group to evaluate JP Appointments in Connecticut. Now an ally, we are working together along with some legislators to reintroduce a bill in 2024. 2024 Legislation We are working with the Secretary […]

‘Are we ready for a wedding?’ Couples wrangle with nuptials amid coronavirus By Danny McDonald, Globe Staff. Updated April 27, 2020, 12:00pm. MALDEN – By any standard, this does not look like a traditional wedding venue. A large, L-shaped couch dominates the space. An elaborate lighting fixture hangs down from the ceiling. The floor tiles are a utilitarian gray. And upon them are stacks of brown Amazon packages awaiting pickup. But in the age of COVID-19, the lobby of a modern apartment building is the new hotel ballroom. Many couples have scrambled to postpone their big day until everyone can […]

Press Release: 1/13/2019

Changes to 1-Day Solemnizer Rule Recommended FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 13, 2019, Fairfield, CT. Significant problems with the state’s one-day solemnizer rule were identified by the Justice of the Peace Association in a white paper submitted to Governor Charlie Baker’s office last week. The Governor appoints Justices of the Peace to perform marriages and process the paperwork required to make the relationship legal. The one-day solemnizer rule allows friends and family to officiate, oftentimes with troublesome results. Most people think when the officiant says “I now pronounce you…” is the most important part of the marriage. But in reality, witnessing […]

Fees – Survey Results

What do you charge to perform a marriage ceremony?  That was the question posed by the Justice of the Peace Association in its anonymous survey of marriage officiants. Most respondents have been officiating for more than eight years, and 82% are members of JPus. All of the almost 100 people who completed the survey live in New England. The Justice of the Peace Association encourages a range of fees, depending on the circumstances of the ceremony. One third of respondents charge $100 for their low-end. On the other hand, three people indicated that $500 is their lowest rate.  Eleven percent […]

Cape Cod and the Islands

Surrounded by water, Cape Cod and the Islands provide the perfect spot for a memorable wedding ceremony. Ideal for a destination wedding, a quiet elopement or something in between. The bayside has calm waters that contrast with the lively ocean marinas and resorts. Leave the mainland, and ferry across to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. Prestigious locales abound. Jack Kerouac was married by a JP in his Hyannis home. Of course, numerous Kennedy weddings happen here, too. The area boasts many high end, luxurious venues. There are lovely and affordable spots, as well. Unsure what is the right place for you? […]

Boston Globe: 7/9/2018

Most important vow for justices of peace is the one to get key details right On June 19, 2018 the Boston Globe ran a story saying that JPs aren’t getting calls for weddings because couples are having friends and family members officiate using the state’s One-Day Solemnizer rule. JPus was concerned about this, as it mischaracterized the important legal (and professional) role that JPs have, and failed to mention all of the problems that ensue from a lay-officiant. The Boston Globe published JPus’ letter to the editor on July 9, 2018, and we’ve been in discussions with the reporter for the original piece. She […]

Union Leader: 7/17/2020

The following op-ed was published in the New Hampshire Union Leader on July 17, 2020. It calls for Governor Sununu to issue an executive order to undo the temporary marriage officiant authorization. Loretta Jay: Amendment undermines marriages… literally ON THE second to last day of the session, the New Hampshire Senate tacked an unrelated amendment onto a guaranteed-to-pass bill. This move, done without notifying constituents, gives anyone temporary authorization to officiate a marriage. This will increase the risk of coronavirus spread. The House passed the bill the next day. New Hampshire needs Governor Sununu to step in and halt this […]
